Description: There’s Something About Mary
This class spotlights music for the Virgin Mary across the long 16th century. While comparing settings of well-known Marian texts (e.g., “Ave Maria,” “Ave maris stella”) by top-notch composers such as Josquin, Palestrina, Verdelot, Byrd, Parsons, Isaac, and Morales, we encounter Mary as the musical scala caelestis: the six-rung ladder of ut-re-mi-fa-sol-la that humanity climbs up to heaven and God climbs down to earth, which scaffolded some of the most breathtaking polyphony ever written.
